The Pit Bull's bad reputation and how it happened

Even with all the bans and the bad publicity, the Pit Bull Terrier is a very popular dog, with high popularity comes bad breeders. Bad breeders bred dogs that should have never been bred, are bred repeatedly regardless of bad temperaments, health problems, or genetic defects. The APBT has become popular for the wrong reasons. The media has spread to the world that Pit Bulls are tough "canine monsters" that some people just had to have. Now all of these dogs are living around the world. These dogs are dangerous, but some Pit Bulls are bred properly and are not aggressive. People now mistake any big dog for a Pit Bull. They are given blame for many attacks some of these were committed by poorly bred APBT. Some breeds that resemble the Pit Bull terrier: Boxers, American bulldogs, Rhodesian Ridge backs, Labrador retrievers, etc.

Bull-baiting

A subtype of Molossian dogs known as Bull Enbeissers were valued for their ability to control cattle. They were called butcher dogs. These dogs would catch bulls on their way to the market by hanging on the bulls nose, and not letting go until the butcher could regain control. After that humans invented Bull-bating, it worked like this:

  • One or two dogs were released, and would attempt to grab the bull by the nose and not letting him go for hours.
  • Then the owner of the dog demonstrated how courageous his dog was by cutting each of her legs, one at a time while the dog was still dragging herself to the bull.
  • The Bull Enbeissers are ancestors of the pit bull.

I think bull batting is horrible and disturbing, why would owners cut of the dogs legs? This is abuse to the dog and is hard to believe that pit bull fighting, although it is illegal, is still happening and dogs are being injured. Why blame the dogs? Humans play a huge role to a dog.

Its the size not the dog

Pit bulls are big muscular dogs, they leave big marks if they bite. There is a Yorkie that lives in my neighborhood. He bites each time anyone pets him. He is aggressive but he is small, he doesn't kill people but he bites everyone. Everyone in the neighborhood knows to be cautious but the owner still doesn't support muzzles. We don't mind but if it were to be a Pit bull we would think differently. Most small dogs are aggressive but we know that they won't do much harm. This is why most people are afraid of pit bulls. Their heads are the same size as ours.

I think the leader of Pit Bull ban is Ignorant

The leader of the pit bull ban can't identify a pit bull when shown various photos. This shows irresponsibility and lack of research. This is very strange why this person  would be the leader of the ban if he doesn't even know how a pit bull looks like. I feel the government is showing citizens who don't know the truth about pit bulls, have a bias point of view. The media in general portrays a pit bull as an evil dog but usually they are loving and caring dogs trained to be aggressive.

The Pit Bull ban in Ontario is horrible

The ban took place on Friday, October 28, 2005. The regulations are that you aren't allowed to own, breed, transfer, import, or abandon Pit Bulls and if you had a pit bull during the ban you could keep your Pit Bull but in public places the dog has to be kept on a 1.8 meter leash and muzzled at all times. There is a $10,000 fine and/or six months of imprisonment and/or the animal can be taken away or destroyed.
I personally think that this ban is horrible. First of all dogs act like their owner. If you teach a pit bull to fight it will be aggressive. Any dog can be turned into a dangerous weapon. If owner can't raise their dogs in a caring environment they shouldn't be owning them. Banning a breed starts a ripple effect which endangers all other purebreds. Italy started with a ban of 13 breeds and now they're up to 40. They just banned welsh corgis. The media is also consistently portraying pit bulls as bad dogs. The other side will claim that pit bulls attack more than any other dogs. Dogwatch an organisation that is strongly against breed specific legislation, declared that in the same time period their were 11 pit bull attacks and 4000 other attacks caused by other breeds. The top three biters are : German Shepards, Cocker spaniels, and Golden retrievers.
Responsible breeders shouldn't breed dogs that are aggressive and have pit bull fighting abilities. Working and fighting dogs have temperamental requirements that need to be handled with sensitivity. This is why the ban is horrible.
